Learning Isim Isyārah (Demonstrative Words) in Arabic Based on a Communicative Approach in Elementary Madrasahs

Arabic language learning in Islamic elementary schools plays a strategic role in building the foundation of students' language skills, particularly as a means of understanding Islamic teachings and communicating simply. One element of Arabic grammar that is important to master from an early age is isim isyārah (demonstrative pronouns), because it functions to indicate objects, people, or places in the context of communication. However, in learning practice, students' understanding of the use of isim isyārah is often rote and not contextualized. This study aims to describe the learning of isim isyārah in Arabic using a communicative approach and examine its role in improving students' understanding and language skills. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that learning isim isyārah based on a communicative approach can improve students' understanding of the function and use of demonstrative pronouns in real contexts, foster students' activeness and self-confidence, and create a more meaningful and enjoyable Arabic language learning atmosphere.
